María de Maeztu Excellence Program

This call is funded through the María de Maeztu Excellence Program of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The BGSMath is strongly committed to the career development of female mathematicians.

Description

Duration: Full-time, fixed-term appointment. Funding is available from Sept 1st, 2017 to June 30th, 2019.

Working conditions: The researcher will be offered a temporary contract by Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, as management entity of the BGSMATH, and hosted by one of the BGSMath research groups. Each fellow will be mentored by a senior researcher at the hosting group.

Gross salary: 34.000 EUR/year.

Medical insurance: Medical coverage for the fellow and family through the public health system.

Mobility allowance or Research funds: up to 3.000 EUR per year.

Number of positions: 3.

Requirements of the applicants
  • Having obtained a PhD after April 1st, 2011 and before April 1st,  2015, as well as a strong research record in any area of mathematics, or neighbouring areas. Career breaks due to family care (full-time), military service or working outside academia will be taken into account, if appropriate proof is provided.
  • A minimum of 2 years of doctoral or postdoctoral work experience outside Catalonia.
  • Currently not contracted as researcher/lecturer by any university or research centre in Catalonia at the time of application.
Additional information
  • BGSMath one-stop office (secretariat@bgsmath.cat) will assist the fellows at the time of incorporation, regarding travel, visa, housing, etc.
  • The fellow will benefit from an office, access to libraries, research facilities and other amenities at the hosting institution.
  • We encourage secondments  either to the private sector or to other research institutions in complementary areas, preferably in Catalonia, for a duration up to 3 months.
Necessary documentation for completing the application

  • Curriculum Vitae (at most 3 pages).
  • List of publications (to be submitted separately from CV).
  • A motivation letter (at most 1 page), detailing: (a) Motivation for joining BGSMath; (b) List of potential hosting research groups;  (c) Previous contacts / collaborations with BGSMath groups, and (d) How this appointment will fit with the candidate’s career goals
  • Research proposal (at most 4 pages) including: (a) Title and summary; (b) State-of-the-art and objectives; (c) Scientific approach, methodology and timescale.
  • Copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate.
  • Name, affiliation and email of two members of academic institutions able to provide a letter of reference for the candidate. Please inform potential referees that letters will be requested by the BGSMath secretariat, and they will need to be uploaded no later than  May 10th , 2017.
  • Evidence proving two years of work experience outside Catalonia (PhD can suffice or scanned contracts/grant, for instance), as well as for any career break.

Evaluation and selection process. Starting date and incorporation
  • Applications will be evaluated by the BGSMath Advisory Scientific Committee with collaboration from external referees. Each candidate will be evaluated with respect to the following  criteria:– Curriculum Vitae (45/100) : PhD Thesis, research after the thesis, mobility and international visibility.  Regarding mobility, diversity of topics and research collaborations will be considered positively.– Research Project (40/100):  Originality and quality of the proposal; feasibility in terms of the applicant´s experience; Expected impact in the research field and society.– Matching between candidate and host (15/100): Potential to open novel research avenues at the hosting research group; potential for cooperation with BGSMath research groups; potential for participation in BGSMath scientific and training activities; Potential for knowledge and technology transfer.
  • Short-listed candidates may be asked to be interviewed (remotely) by members of the Advisory Scientific Committee and the Government Board. Expected date for interviews will be last week of May.
  • Incorporation Selected candidates will get a signed letter from the BGSMath director with the corresponding offer. The incorporation date is flexible and negotiable, within at most four months after the date of acceptance.
  • Selected candidates will get a signed letter from the BGSMath Director with the corresponding offer. They will be given a period of two weeks to accept or decline the offer and communicate his/her starting date, as well as the hosting research group and mentor.
  • If the appointment is declined, it will be offered to the next candidate in the reserve list. Once all appointments have been accepted, the list of fellows and their research projects will be posted at the BGSMath website.
