Banco de Santander, within the framework of the agreement between the consortium Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) and Banco Santander S.A., via Santander Universities, provides financial support to the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath) as one of the María de Maeztu excellence units with the aim of incorporating a Banco de Santander – María de Maetzu Postdoctoral researcher. The CRM acts as the beneficiary organization of the call.

Description

The position is for carrying out postdoctoral research at the highest level in the area of Mathematical Modelling. This includes in particular Applied statistics and probability, Mathematical engineering, and Numerical analysis and simulation. Candidates should identify potential BGSMath researchers or groups in which to develop their research projects.

Requirements for applying

The candidates who seek to apply have to meet the following criteria:

a) The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree.

b) The Ph.D. degree must have been awarded between January 1st, 2011, and December 31st, 2013. The official date of the degree is considered to be the defence and approval date of the Ph.D. thesis.

Under any of the following situations an extension on the lower date limit for obtaining the Ph.D. degree stated in the previous paragraph (January 1st, 2011) will be applied, provided that the interruption periods stemmed from such situations occurred between February 1st, 2016 (the deadline for completing the application forms of the Juan de la Cierva Incorporación call, as stated in article 74.3.b) of the “Resolución de 2 de diciembre de 2015, de la Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación” – BOE of December 7, 2015) and January 1st, 2010.

  • Rest periods caused by maternity or paternity leave enjoyed in accordance with situations protected by the social security system’s net. In this case, an extension of one year per child will be applied.
  • Serious illness or accident suffered by the applicant, with a medical leave equal to, or exceeding, 3 months. In this case, an extension equal to the justified leave time will be applied, rounding up to complete months.
  • Assistance to persons in a situation of dependence, according to the law 39/2006 of December 14th, to promote personal autonomy and care for dependent people, for a minimum period of 3 months. As in the previous case, an extension equal to the justified leave time will be applied, rounding up to complete months.

These periods will be pointed out and duly justified at the time of application.

In the case of applicants to positions reserved for people with disabilities, the Ph.D. degree must have been obtained between January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2013. The extensions listed above can be applied provided that the same situations are present.

c) For applicants possessing more than one Ph.D. degree, the previous requirements will refer to the degree awarded first.

d) The applicant must not be, or have been, a recipient of the Juan de la Cierva Incorporación or Ramón y Cajal grants from the 2008-2012 national plan or the 2013-2016 state plan.

e) In the case of joining a centre where the applicant has completed the Ph. D. studies, it is required to have made a postdoctoral stay at a different R&D centre during 12 months at least.

Terms of the contract

The elected candidate will obtain a position for a period of 2 years.

The contract is full-time with a 37,5-hour working week and a gross salary of 26.250€. There will a mobility allowance up to 2.000 EUR per year.

Selection process

Applications will be first subjected to an eligibility check.

The scientific evaluation will be done by ANEP (Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva) together with BGSMath and CRM. The evaluation and selection of the applications will be in line with the best practices internationally recognised, and will consist on a scientific and technical peer evaluation.

Each application will be evaluated by one expert proposed by the research units and another proposed by ANEP. BGSMath and CRM will provide ANEP with a list proposing external evaluators.

The evaluation and selection of the proposals will be done according to the following criteria:

        Candidate’s curricular merits 0-50.

  • Contributions. 0 – 25. The relevance and contribution of the candidate will be positively taken into account in articles published in scientific journals, books or chapters from scientific and technical books, papers presented at conferences, patents granted or licensed, and, in general, any other input on which to assess the different aspects of research, including technology transfer.
  • Participation in international activity 0–20.  Direct participation in actions related to international programs and projects will be positively taken into account, especially related to doctoral and postdoctoral international mobility programs, as well as publications, participation or funding of projects and contracts in international collaboration.
  • Other curricular merits 0–5. Among other items, awards, mentions and distinctions will be positively taken into account, scientific dissemination activities and any other contributions which would allow the assessment of the merits in research not included in the preceding paragraphs.

        Impact of the grant on the R&D activity of the María de Maeztu unit: 0-50

  • the impact in achieving the objectives of the María de Maeztu Strategic Research Program will be assessed. The main objectives of the program are: Doctoral and postdoctoral training, Internationalization, Excellence in research, Knowledge transfer, and Outreach and dissemination.
Resolution

After the evaluation, BGSMath and CRM will provide Banco Santander with a prioritized list of candidates. Banco Santander is the ultimate responsible in the final selection of candidates.

Banco Santander is the responsible authority in making the final selection of applications.

The final decision will be notified to the applicants by email.

Governance and Administration

CRM and BGSMath will provide the successful candidate with the facilities, material and training resources necessary for the proper development of his/her work, and will grant them the rights and benefits enjoyed by their other postdoctoral fellows.

Necessary documentation for completing the application
  • Application form with personal information and contact address.
  • Curriculum Vitae of at most 3 pages (publications must be submitted separately).
  • A list of publications.
  • A motivation letter of at most 1 page, including:
    • Brief explanation of the motivation for applying, what can the applicant bring to BGSMath, and how this appointment will fit with the applicant’s career goals.
    • List of potential BGSMath host researchers or research groups.
    • Previous contacts or collaborations, if any.
  • Research proposal of at most 4 pages including:
    • Title and summary. State of-the-art and objectives. Scientific approach: methodology and timescale.
    • Expected impact on the research area, related areas, industry and society.
  • Copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate.
  • The name, affiliation and email address of two senior fellows (academic or industrial) who may be asked to send confidential reference letters.  (Please notice that reference letters will be asked directly by BGSMath on November 25th and must arrive to BGSMath no later than November 30th (5 days after the end of the call). Letters received after this date will not be considered.)

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

All the documentation must be uploaded in the online application system in a single PDF file.

Applications not fulfilling this requirement will not be considered.
