The Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics opens a call for 1 JUNIOR postdoctoral position in any area of mathematics. The fellowships will be funded through the Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence Award (2015-2019). The deadline for submission of applications is Friday 14th September 2018 (until midnight).

The researcher(s) will be offered a temporary contract by Centre de Recerca Matemàtica. S/He will be hosted by one of the BGSMath research groups participating at the MdM Unit of Excellence (groups at the UAB, UB, UPC or CRM, please check here). Each fellow will be mentored by a senior researcher at the hosting group.

Requirements for applying
  • Having obtained a PhD after 1st July 2016 and before 1st November 2018, as well as a strong research record in any area of mathematics or neighboring areas. Career breaks due to family care (full-time), military service or working outside academia will be taken into account, if appropriate proof is provided.
  • A minimum of 2 years of doctoral or postdoctoral work experience outside Catalonia.
  • Not been currently contracted by any university or research centre in Catalonia at the time of application.

 

Requested documentation

Online application form, filled in with contact data and personal information, plus the following documents, included in one SINGLE PDF FILE (10Mb maximum) to be uploaded onto the online application system:

  •     Curriculum Vitae (at most 3 pages).
  •     List of publications (to be submitted separately from CV).
  •     A motivation letter (at most 1 page), detailing: (a) Motivation for joining BGSMath; (b) List of potential hosting research groups;  (c) Previous contacts / collaborations with BGSMath groups, and (d) How this appointment will fit with the candidate’s career goals
  •     Research proposal (at most 4 pages) including: (a) Title and summary; (b) State-of-the-art and objectives; (c) Scientific approach, methodology and timescale.
  •     Copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate, or formal proof of the expected date of defence (such an scanned pdf signed by your PhD supervisor, head of the Department…etc), which should be before 1st November 2018.
  •     Name, affiliation and email of two members of academic institutions able to provide a letter of reference for the candidate. Please inform potential referees that letters will be requested by the BGSMath secretariat, and they will need to be uploaded no later than 20th September 2018.
  •     Evidence proving two years of work experience outside Catalonia (PhD can suffice or scanned contracts/grant, for instance), as well as for any career break.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Duration & conditions

Full-time, 1 year, fixed-term appointment. Starting date is expected to be 1st November 2018, though it will be flexible.

Gross salary: 24,000 €/year

Mobility allowance: Max. 2.000 EUR to cover a research stay (approx. 1 month) at an international research institution to work on the funded project.

Medical insurance: Medical coverage for the fellow and family through the public health system.

Evaluation and selection process

Applications will be evaluated by the BGSMath Scientific Committee with collaboration from external referees. Each candidate will be evaluated with respect to the following criteria:– Curriculum Vitae (45/100) : PhD Thesis, research after the thesis, and mobility and international visibility (if it applies, postdoctoral work at a different institution from that awarding the candidate´s PhD ;short-stays, visits, invited talks at international conferences…etc)– Research Project (40/100):  Originality and quality of the proposal; feasibility in terms of the applicant´s experience; Expected impact in the research field and society.– Matching between proposal/candidate and host (15/100):  Potential for cooperation and knowledge transfer between the candidate and the hosting group; Potential for participation in scientific, training and innovation activities at BGSMath (beyond the interaction with the hosting group);

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed (remotely) by a gender-balanced panel comprising members of the Scientific Committee and the Government Board.

Appointment:The successful candidate will get a letter from the BGSMath Director with the corresponding offer. They will be given a period of two weeks to accept or decline the offer and communicate the hosting research group and mentor.

If the appointment is declined, it will be offered to the next candidate in the reserve list. Once the appointment is accepted, the list of fellows and their research projects will be posted at the BGSMath website.

Additional information

The CRM is recipient of the Human Resources for Scientific Researchers Award (HR4SR). The evaluation and selection process will be carried out following the Charter and Code for Recruitment of Researchers, and taking into account the Gender Plan in the Maria de Maeztu Strategic Research Programme. The Gender Plan foresees the recruitment of 30% minimum of female postdoctoral researchers in the period 2015-2019.
