María de Maeztu Excellence Program

This call is funded through the María de Maeztu Excellence Program of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The BGSMath is strongly committed to the career development of female mathematicians.

Description

Duration: 2 years.

Number of positions and Research areas: There are two positions offered, one in each of the following area groups.

1. Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry and Logic.

2. Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Probability Theory.

Location at one of the five BGSMath institutions: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Centre de Recerca Matemàtica.

Gross salary: 26.250 EUR.

Social and medical benefits: included. Medical coverage for the fellow and family through the public health system.

Mobility allowance: up to 2.000 EUR per year, to be provided by the host research group.

Requirements
  • Having a Ph.D. degree at the time of application, preferably obtained no more than four years before that date, and a strong research record.
  • At least two years of doctoral or postdoctoral experience outside Catalonia.
Additional information
  • Contract under Spanish laws.
  • Appointed fellows will be hosted by one the BGSMath research groups and will benefit from the usual working conditions at the host institutions, including office space, access to libraries and computer networks.
  • Each fellow will be assigned a mentor from the host BGSMath unit.
  • The BGSMath One-Stop office will assist the fellows at the time of incorporation.
Necessary documentation for completing the application
  • Application form with personal information and contact address.
  • Curriculum Vitae of at most 3 pages (publications must be submitted separately).
  • A list of publications.
  • A motivation letter of at most 1 page, including: a) Brief explanation of the motivation for applying; b) list of potential host researchers or research groups; c) previous contacts or collaborations, if any, and d) how this appointment will fit with the applicant’s career goals
  • Research proposal of at most 4 pages including: a) Title and summary. b) State of-the-art and objectives. c) Scientific approach: methodology and timescale.
  • Copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate.
  • Evidence showing at least two years of experience outside Catalonia.
  • Name, affiliation and email of two members of academic institutions able to provide a letter of reference for the candidate. Please inform potential referees that letters will be asked directly by the BGSMath secretariat, and they will need to be uploaded no later than 5 days after the application closing date.Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Evaluation and selection process
  • The applications will be evaluated by the BGSMath Advisory Scientific Committee with collaboration from external referees. Each proposal will be evaluated with respect to the following  criteria (weights in brackets).– Curriculum Vitae (45/100). Ph.D. thesis (20/100); Research after the thesis (15/100); Mobility and international visibility(10/100).– Research Project (40/100). Originality and quality of the proposal (20/100); Feasibility in terms of the applicant’s experience (10/100); Expected impact in the research field and society (10/100).– Matching between proposal and host (15/100). Potential for cooperation with hosting research groups (5/100); Potential for participation in scientific and training activities of BGSMath (5/10); Potential with knowledge and technology transfer(5/10).
  • During the evaluation process candidates may be asked to be interviewed (remotely) by members of the Advisory Scientific Committee or other BGSMath faculty members.
  • Selected candidates will get a signed letter from the BGSMath director with the corresponding offer. The incorporation date is flexible and negotiable, within at most four months after the date of acceptance.
  • Selected candidates will be given a period of two weeks to accept or decline the offer, and to communicate the incorporation date, the hosting research group and the mentor of his/her choice. If the appointment is declined, it will be offered to the candidate appearing first at that time in the reserve list.
  • Once all appointments are offered and accepted, the list of appointees and their research projects will be posted in the webpage.
