Journalist Cristina Sáez from the Big Vang, the science section of La Vanguardia, has had the chance to sit down and interview Iain Couzin, professor of Biodiversity and Collective Behaviour at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and director of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology.
Couzin has studied the collective behaviour of large groups of animals and insects, analysing their interactions, and has discovered that collaborative animals “vote” and what the majority wants is what effectively prevails in the group, as happens, for example, in schools of fish. Couzin has participated recently in the Complexity Day of the Catalan Association for the Study of Complex Systems, organized by researchers from the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) and the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath).
