I finished my PhD in algebraic geometry in 2002 and afterwards I got a Fulbright postdoctoral grant to study at University of California Berkeley. There I started a collaboration with Robin Hartshorne that lead to relevant results in liaison theory and to the link of this theoryto the classification of ACM bundles. In 2004 I changed my interest towards applications of mathematics in biology. Since then I have collaborated with biologists at the Centre for Genomic Regulation and our group at UPC has managed to provide new and successful methods for phylogenetic reconstruction. I have published more than 30 research papers (some of them have achieved a high impact, for example my Scopus h-index is 8), I have directed one Ph D theses and I am the principal investigator of a team of 18 researchers.

Research Interests

  • Algebraic and geometric tools in phylogenetic reconstruction
  • Algebraic evolutionary models
  • Global and local geometry of phylogenetic varieties
