The BGSMath launches its first Summer Internship Program to provide undergraduate students in Mathematics and close-by disciplines the opportunity to conduct summer research projects. The goal of the Program is to encourage students, from any nationality, in the pursuit of a scientific career and provide them with a first experience as researchers.

A maximum of 4 internship positions will be awarded in 2018.

Internships will be four weeks long and should take place between 11 June 2018 and 27 July. The student will be working under the supervision of a group leader or a senior member of the research group.

Eligibility criteria
  • Undergraduates with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in mathematics and scientific research who are in their final two years of studies in mathematics, statistics or related subjects (e.g. Computer Science, Theoretical Physics).
  • Two full years (4 semesters) of college course work completed by the time the internship commences.
  • Fluent Spanish and/or English.
  • Positions will be awarded on a competitive basis taking into consideration the student’s academic records and a motivation letter. Applicants will be asked to specify the names of three of the available projects in their order of preference. We will make our best efforts to assign the candidates to one of them.
Duration

The summer internship will consist of four weeks (37.5 hours/ working week), distributed over 6 weeks, from the second week of June (starting on Monday, 11 June) to the fourth week of July (starting on Monday, 23 July), approximately. Exact dates will be agreed between student and supervisor. The internship will include research work as well as participation at group seminars and other activities that could be scheduled during that month (for more detail, check the proposed projects). The student will present his/her project in a seminar during the final week of the stay.

Application Process

Applications for the BGSMath Summer Internship Program are accepted exclusively online through our recruitment system and must be prepared in English. Please upload all the required documents (academic records, motivation letter, contact details for your referee) as one PDF file of less than 10 MB.

The application will include the following information:

  • Completed online registration form.
  • Updated academic records, detailing the title of the undergraduate courses completed so far, as well as the obtained grades.
  • Candidates will be asked to provide contact details of one referee. Then the online system will send an email to the referee with the steps to follow to be able to upload the reference letter to your registration form. This message to your referee will be sent from 9 to 12 April.
  • Motivation letter: Description of your interest for mathematical research, what you are expecting from your participation in the BGSMath Summer Internship Programme, and how it will benefit you both on a personal and academic level, plus your three preferred projects (in order) and the reasons behind your choice. We advise you to check information available at www.bgsmath.cat regarding the IP leading the group of choice and our diverse campuses before selecting your preferred project(s).

All the information must be submitted by the application deadline. Applications received after 9 April 2018 will not be considered.

Benefits
  • One return (train or flight) ticket to the student’s place of residence. (Only if the candidate is a student registered at a University outside Catalonia).
  • Accommodation at students´ halls of residence and meal vouchers (lunch/working days) for the period. (Only if the candidate is a student registered at a University outside Catalonia).
  • Accident insurance for the training period. No medical insurance will be provided, so students from foreign countries must bring the European Health Insurance Card and/or a private medical insurance covering the period of the internship.
Selection procedure

Undergraduate students will be selected on the basis of their academic achievements. Fluency in English and previous experience in research will be taken into account during the selection process.

If the number of applicants exceeds that of available positions, the BGSMath Scientific Committee will rank candidates based on their merits. Candidates might be interviewed by the investigator offering the position. Otherwise, the hosting principal investigator will make the final decision about the admission of the applicant.

Candidates will be duly notified about the results of their application by 7 May, 2018.
